Why: professors and grad students
Following a discussion at profgrrrrl's, I want to know: why does this happen so often that grad students and their profs fall in love? Is it really love or do they just pretend in order to get a job? Or are the students only abused by their supervisors?

Beats me. As a student, I never was interested in a prof. Hrm. Trying to make sure of that. No, I think that is correct. And I don't think I even looked at them as possibilities as a grad student. Any weird lusting would have been an undergrad thing (and I'm just not recalling any)
As a prof, never ever ever interested in a student.
I suspect, however, that students are interested in profs because they seem powerful/intelligent -- traits which can be attractive.
